The Sanctuary is located just off the N2 from Cape Town to Port Elizabeth. The next thing that classifies as a town is Witelsbos. Michael runs the place but his two daughters (Samantha and Robin) keep it running. Jean Marie(I think that is how it is spelled) also works and stays at the farm. Niki and Juanita come in every morning. Most of them have at least one dog that follows them around everywhere they go. The Sanctuary is further from the beach and from the sea than I hoped it would be but the countryside is stunning nevertheless. Everything is green around here because most of it is farmland. A lot of dairy farms donate dead cows and calves. The farmers used to give the dead cows to the workers as well as the Sanctuary but they stopped doing that because the farm workers killed the cows in order to get them. There is still a lot of poverty here.
As far as the Sanctuary life is concerned, it is pretty much in the middle of nowhere: No internet access, no running water. We pump water from the nearby river (Elands Rivier) and then heat it up in the donkey using wood. So when it rains, we cannot bath.(They don’t have showers.) The water from the river is very clear but of a brownish colour because of all the minerals and all the iron in it. My toilet is outside. It is just a 3 second walk. But I have to go outside.
Dangers in this area are: Ticks, poisonous spiders, scorpion, leopards and wild pigs.
